Pactola Lake will appear in the upcoming South Dakota DLC for American Truck Simulator. Located in the Black Hills, the reservoir is one of the confirmed landmarks along US-385 and will be visible as players drive through the region.
The first preview also shows a visitor center near the lake. Its elevated position looks across the water and the surrounding forest, giving the area a clear visual identity without taking drivers far away from the main road. That kind of recognizable scenery is also one reason players keep returning to large open worlds through community content such as Fallout 4 Mods, where familiar locations can be changed or expanded without losing their original identity.
A recognizable stop on US-385
Pactola Lake is the largest reservoir in the Black Hills. That scale makes it a natural landmark for the South Dakota map, especially in a region where dense trees and rocky terrain can limit long views from the road.
The Pactola Lake ATS location should help players understand where they are along US-385. Large natural features often work as useful reference points in American Truck Simulator, particularly on rural roads where there may be fewer towns, junctions or company yards.
The visitor center
SCS Software has confirmed that the visitor center overlooking the lake will be included. The current preview does not say whether players can enter the site, stop there or use it as a viewpoint, so it is safer to treat it as part of the roadside scenery for now.
Even as a visual location, the building adds context to the lake. It makes the area feel like a real destination visited by people rather than a body of water placed beside the highway with no surrounding infrastructure.
How it fits the Black Hills drive
Pactola Lake gives the US-385 section another type of scenery between its pine forests, hills and rock formations. Water changes the look of the route and creates a short open view before the road returns to denser terrain.
The lake also gives SCS a location that can be recognized without large signs or city buildings. Players approaching it for the first time should be able to identify the area from the reservoir, the forested shoreline and the visitor center above the water.
South Dakota remains an upcoming DLC with no announced release date. Pactola Lake is only one confirmed location, but it already gives a better idea of how SCS plans to represent quieter natural landmarks across the Black Hills.
